from the HHAMS ! Here is an update on the Hempstead Harbor Aerodrome as of April 21st, 2008. Work continues on the remediation project at the Aerodrome. We have met with Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman, and it has been established that the cost of the new runways is included in the remediation project budget and will cost the town nothing. In addition, the HHAMS have pledged to provide the funding and manpower to build new impound and pit areas, including tables and fencing. We have met with the County Department of Public Works, who are running the project, and reviewed the plans for the new runways. We have suggested some revisions and are working with them to achieve those changes. We have investigated the claims of Councilman Pollack that there are complaints about noise from the Aerodrome. We have requested reports from the Town and from the County about any such complaints. Both the town and county have reported no noise complaints on record. The HHAMS also made a request under the Freedom of Information Act of the Port Washington Police Department about complaints. The Police went back to 1996 and came up with sixteen complaints about the property. Eight of those complaints were filed by HHAMS members about dirt bikers, hunters, and other trespassers. The rest were filed by other citizens. Of the sixteen complaints, none were about our flying activity in any way. We have met with the Town Parks Department and are currently working out a new permit system. We cannot predict when the Aerodrome will reopen, as this depends largely on the weather, and how fast the contractor can complete the remidiation project. We feel it is reasonable to expect to be flying again before the end of this year. We will post new developments as we get them.

"The friendship and help from the members has made it possible for me to continue flying. At the field, willing hands, sources of information, and pleasant companionship have combined to create a very enjoyable environment." .............Lloyd D. Rothschild "Joining the HHAMS was one of the best things that I've done. It taught me how to fly, build, and most of all repair. In all honesty though, I have acquired many new friends who gave me sound advice and gave of themselves when I was having trouble with a plane at the field, even if it meant them not flying that day." .............Matt Canarick "I very seldom buy fuel anymore, helping and instructing new pilots gives me more flying time using other people's equipment and fuel. They learn to fly & maintain their models. When they get their Blue Cards it makes me proud and happy." ..............Paul Zink
